Local Business Owner Builds More Than Concrete—He Builds Community

By Wendy Weichenthal on June 16, 2025

A family smiles.
The Silva family from left to right: Edgar, daughter Nayeli, wife Alexis, and sons Luca and Jayden.

For Edgar Silva, concrete is more than just a job — it’s a passion that’s shaped his life and honors his roots. Silva, owner of Veloz Outdoors in Marion, has spent the last decade pouring more than just sidewalks and driveways. He’s poured his heart into building a life and a business from the ground up, transforming a side hustle with friends into a full-time enterprise specializing in decorative and resilient concrete work.

“I’ve been doing all sorts of construction my entire life,” Silva said. “But when I got into concrete, I fell in love with it. It’s a fun monster.”

Harding Graduate Excited About Marion’s Future

Originally from Mexico, Silva moved to Marion at the age of 5. He graduated from Marion Harding High School in 2008 and now calls the city home with his wife, children, and Paco, his loyal German shepherd. While he once heard negative things about his hometown, his outlook has changed with time and experience.

“One day it kind of finally hits — you’ve got good people, good schools, parks all over the place,” he said. “My kids are happy here. I’m excited about the direction Marion’s going.”

Decades of Experience

Silva brings over 20 years of experience in the construction industry, having worked on large-scale commercial projects with large firms before venturing out on his own.

Edgar Silva was proud to start Veloz Outdoor.

With the support of a close-knit group of friends and mentors, he’s built Veloz Outdoors into a thriving operation known for its quality work and community spirit.

“I started doing side jobs with friends, and it just grew from there,” Silva said. “People would ask, ‘Do you know someone who can do concrete?’ Eventually, I turned it from a side job into something full-time.”

Veloz Offers Decorative and Custom Concrete

Today, Silva focuses heavily on decorative and custom concrete, such as finishes that mimic pavers, and enjoys the variety and creativity the work brings.

Concrete that looks like pavers forms a patio outside of a home.
Custom and decorative concrete is a specialty of Veloz Outdoors.

“People think concrete’s just sidewalks and driveways, but there’s so much more you can do with it,” he said. “I love the pace, the variety. Concrete is resilient. It’s low-maintenance, and it lasts.”

Silva Honors His Roots

But Silva’s work isn’t just about business; it’s deeply personal. He named his company Veloz Outdoors in honor of his grandfather, a man he credits with shaping his values and work ethic.

“He was everything to me,” Silva said. “We had a farm in Mexico. I’d follow him around on my old bike, machete in hand, just doing chores so I could spend more time with him.”

Silva lost his grandfather the same day his second son was born.

“I got to bask in my son being born, and two hours later I got the call. Do I leave for Mexico? Do I not?” he recalled. “I try to do the best I can because I named my company after him. I don’t want to mess it up for him.”

Veloz Outdoor Invests in Marion

Silva is also investing in his community’s future, including sponsoring several local sports teams. Silva is energized by the changes he sees happening.

“There’s been a lot of momentum in Marion,” he said. “A lot of cleaning up, a lot of progress. It’s definitely nice to see.”

As Marion continues to grow, so does Veloz Outdoors. Silva sits at the helm, blending craftsmanship with heart.

“I stay busy. I like the hecticness. It keeps my mind busy,” he said with a grin. “And I’m just trying to build something solid for my family, for my friends, and for this community.”
