K9 Viking

By MarionMade! on October 2, 2018

During the month of October we are highlighting information about the K9 units of Marion County. The dogs are trained to conduct building and large area searches for hidden criminals, tracking lost persons and criminals, article/evidence searches, and narcotics detection.

Though this is a light-hearted interview — asking questions as if the dogs have voices — they are valued personnel to the police department and community.   We thank them and their partners for their service and time given to protect the people of Marion County.

Can you tell us about your name’s meaning and how you got this name?

Viking’s name came from a “Quarters for K-9’s” fundraising program that was put on through all of the Marion County school districts. The school that ended up raising the most money for the program would have the K9 named after their mascot. River Valley raised the largest amount — which is where the name ‘Viking’ came from.

What kind of dog are you?  Before coming to Marion County, where did you live?

I am a two-year-old German Shepard and I was imported from Czechoslovakia.

You have a partner–Corey Galyk.  What are his best characteristics?  How long have you worked together?

I have been paired with my partner, Lt. Corey Galyk, for about six months. I would say his best characteristic is enjoying being involved in the Marion community and being active to help deter crime.

What is your best skill at work?

Right now, I am still in training for patrol work and plan to be finished up in mid-November. As of right now, my best skill at work is making public appearances and putting a smile on everyone’s face. I hope to add to my list of best skills once I finish my training.

At your time off, what is your favorite thing to do?  Do you have a favorite toy?

During my time off, I enjoy spending time with my partner, running around the yard, and, of course, playing fetch with my favorite toy which is a tennis ball.

If you could tell the people of Marion anything, what would you want to say?

I am new to the Marion community and it has been a very warm welcoming for me. I appreciate everything that was done by the local schools, the Marion Browns Backers, private donors, and the community to help bring me here to make me part of the Marion community. I look forward to doing my best serving and protecting the community.
