Back to School with Dr. Ron Iarussi

By MarionMade! on September 24, 2018

During the month of September, we will be featuring each of the school superintendents in Marion County, asking them each the same set of questions. We are using this as an opportunity to show their passion for education and their schools as well as a little glimpse about them. Today, we visit with Ron Iarussi, the new Marion City Schools Superintendent. We welcome you to Marion!

What made you want to be in education?

I had some very influential teachers, administrators and coaches in my life that mentored me and pushed me to be successful despite obstacles.

How long how you been in the education field? How long in Marion County?

I have been an educator for 30 years. This is my first year in Marion County

What was your favorite subject in school and why?

I would have to say all social studies courses. I love history, government, economics etc. I have always been intrigued by politics.

What is your favorite book to reread and why?

I have read the Last Lecture probably 7 or 8 times by Randy Pausch. It seems to keep everything in perspective and reminds you to live everyday like it is your last.

What do you believe are important skills to help a student be successful in school?

First I think that the skills of a good teacher are the most important factor in a student’s success in school. I don’t think you can point out any one skill as being more important than another. The skills students need depend on the students themselves. The key is being able to meet the needs of students that have diverse learning styles and diverse backgrounds.

If you had 3 wishes for your students this year in school, what would you wish?

I hope every student feels safe when they come to school. School should be a place that students can come to and feel loved and cared for. I hope all the students in Marion get the skills they need to be successful human beings.

Tell us something that most people don’t know about you.

My hobby right now since my children are no longer at home is physical fitness. I have been doing crossfit for about two years and have competed in the Crossfit Open the last two years. In two years I get to compete as a master. Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing!

Thank you, Ron, for sharing with MarionMade!
